English Words with Latin Roots

Many English words have Latin roots. Here is a list:

-dict- (to say) contradict, dictate, predict
-duc- (to lead) educate, produce, reduce
-gress- (to walk) digress, progress, transgress
-ject- (to throw) eject, inject, interject
-pel- (to drive) compel, dispel, repel
-pend- (to hang) append, depend, suspend
-port- (to carry) deport, export, import
-scrib- (to write) describe, prescribe, transcribe
-tract- (to pull) attract, contract, extract
-vert- (to turn) convert, divert, invert

From the list it is evident that Latin roots can combine with prefixes to form many words. Besides the verbs illustrated in the list, other parts of speech can be formed such as nouns (description), adjectives (attractive) and adverbs (compellingly). Latin roots are an important part of English morphology.
